Self-Storage Packing Tips

Proper packing and strategic placement can make all the difference! This will ensure your belongings don't get damaged or broken and will utilize as much space as possible in your unit.

Good Boxes & Packing Materials

To help keep your items from getting broken or dusty sturdy cardboard boxes or plastic bins are essential. Although plastic bins are more costly, they do add an extra level of protection. You'll need strong tape, packing peanuts or bubble wrap and newspaper. You can also use old blankets, sheets and towels for padding and protection. You will also need packing labels and/or a permanent marker to write the contents on the side of each box. Plastic bags might seem like a good idea for storing small items, but will invite mildew.

Organize everything once you arrive

Before you arrive, try to determine which items you may need easy access to. Please furniture and other rarely used items in the back of the unit. Leaving the space near the door for the things you might need or want sooner rather than later. Place heavy items on the bottom. Although things like TV's or file boxes may seem fine on the top of other items, the weight will slowly begin to crush what's underneath them. Removing table legs and storing the table top flat against the wall will save a lot of space in your unit.

Books & Documents

Do not place boxes directly on the concrete floor. Use pallets to prevent moisture absorption. When packin your books use small book boxes rather than one large one. Pack your books flat rather than upright to protect their spines from damage.

Appliances

Freezers and/or refrigerators need to be thoroughly thawed and dry before storing. The doors should be slightly ajar. Be sure to clean stoves and cooking equipment before storing. Some items can be stored inside large appliances. Boxes can also be stacked on top of stoves, refrigerators and freezers.

Clothing, Curtains and Bedding

Wardrobe boxes are wonderful to pack clothing. Hang the clothing to retain their shape. Items that can't be hung should be neatly folded and stored in dresser drawers, chest, plastic totes or boxes.

Tools & Equipment

Preparing metal tools and equipment correctly before storing will prevent rust from forming. You should drain fuel completely and rub down with some oil.

Dishes & Breakables

All breakable items should be wrapped individually in newspaper or bubble wrap. You can purchase boxes specifically designed for dishes and glasses. Place a layer of packing in the bottom and at the top of boxes containing dishes, glassware and other breakable items. Place mugs, bowls and plates on edge, and wrapped glasses should be placed near the top of the cartons. Fill in all the pockets with packing materials.
